Reporting to the CTO, the Senior Manager of Software Engineering will be part of the senior dev leadership team responsible for end-to-end software development and quality assurance. This includes the design, development, configuration and on-going sustainment to ensure successful execution.
 
The Sr. Managers will each have direct reporting responsibility for 2-4 assigned full-stack scrum teams (6 total teams today; 8 by EOY). Responsibilities will include interviewing/selecting top talent, managing evolving/complex demands and removing obstacles to ensure the productivity of the teams. This role will also provide hands-on leadership, coaching, and mentoring as well as insights for working towards delivering reliable, high quality software solutions, writing impeccable software, and delivering on time with required operational efficiency.
 
Role Accountabilities:

  • Lead, guide, and direct product development from design to delivery 
  • Ensure individuals receive hands-on technical guidance, mentoring, and leadership in full-stack development using internal and external resources
  • Collaborate effectively with the product management team to manage, prioritize and execute against the product roadmap
  • Understand the business value, market strategy, overall architecture, performance, risks, etc., to effectively support the product roadmap (e.g. making recommendations on staffing, 3rd party software, etc.) with focus on increasing customer satisfaction
  • Lead the creation and implementation of methods and processes for key development areas such as architecture, design reviews, work breakdown, code reviews, quality metrics and others
  • Effectively manage and communicate expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion; proactively manage changes in scope, identify potential crises, and devise contingency plans
  • Coach, mentor, motivate, and supervise team members and contractors, promoting accountability for assigned work; mentor team members on career growth 
  • Encourage innovation, outside-the-box thinking, and teamwork; instill a mindset of continuous improvement
  • Foster a culture of transparency and accountability, optimal individual contribution, and teamwork
  • Communicate effectively across the organization – from developer to executive
  • Execute other phases of the performance management life cycle not already mentioned such as goal-setting, rewarding, disciplining, and conducting annual performance appraisals
  •  Manage other employee relations activities such as effective conflict resolution; engage HR as needed
  • Other relevant projects as assigned

 
The skills and experiences you’ll need:

  • 10+ years total professional experience, which should be made up of the following:
    • 3+ years of experience as an Engineering or Delivery Manager leading global teams
    • 5+ years of experience delivering a SaaS product that is highly reliable and scalable
    • 3+ years of experience working in an Agile, Scrum team environment
    • 5+ years as a software engineer (preferably Ruby on Rails experience)
  • Excels in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Proven ability to schedule software development and to lead a development team in producing quality products
  • Proven technical team leadership skills including employee motivation, project management, and problem / conflict resolution 
  • Advanced knowledge of software development lifecycle and methods, software testing procedures, and configuration management 
  • Must have exceptional soft skills and ability to collaborate within a cross functional team that includes engineers, project managers, product managers, operational staff, executive leadership, etc
  • Ability to work well in a team and give and receive feedback in a constructive and collaborative way
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines effectively
  • Excellent software architecture and design pattern knowledge is beneficial
  • Excellent database architecture and data access patterns knowledge is beneficial
  • Adept at conducting research into architectural and technical issues is beneficial
  • B.S. Degree in Computing Science, Technology Management, Engineering is preferred
